Durban North 3/18/96

Family-

Hi! How are things? I don't know that I have all that much to write about since I just spoke to you the other day. It was so good to talk to you all. I thought I'd become homesick after talking to you, but I really wasn't at all. In fact, it motivated me to work harder n' stuff.

I am now staying in Durban North. It is very nice. It is a very wealthy area which makes the work harder because the people are less humble and not as willing to listen to our message. This area is a lot more like the states than Empangeni.

Sister Tolman is cool This is going to be a different companionship but I think that it will be good. She leaves in 5 months so we may be together that long, but most likely not. This companionship motivates me to get out and be even more motivated to help keep Sister Tolman motivated. It will be really good for me.

I really don't know what else to write about. I got a letter from Kim and Brian and the kids. It was really good to hear from them. The letters from Thomas and Brittany were the best!

It's been quite cool here lately. It's starting into winter, so I guess you would call that fall. But today it is really hot. We are right by the ocean so on days like today I crave the water a little bit as we drive by it.

It is amazing the size difference in the ward here compared to the branch in Empangeni. It was refreshing to be in a big ward again. The Bishop of the ward is so cool! I really like him. His name is Bishop Naismith. He is Scottish. His accent is so rad! He is just a really cool man. I was really impressed with him.

Well, rumor has it that I'll be training in May. That's just speculation, I think from other Sisters. In a way it would be cool, but it also scares me too. I guess I shouldn't get all worried about it until it happens, if it does.

I'm really struggling to fill up this page. I don't know what to say. Did you read in the church news about Elder Ballard coming to South Africa? The article is about when he was in Johannesburg, but he came here also. Also, a lot of people from here went up there for the Regional Conference. I wish we as missionaries could have gone, but we couldn't because it was out of our mission.

Well, I'm going to end for now. I'll have more to say next week, I am sure! I hope all is well with all of you. Mom, please keep me informed on how you are doing. My prayers are with you. Take care! Thanks for your letters! I love you tons!

Love,
Michelle

(My mom was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis while I was on my mission. At the beginning of this week we were at a mission conference and I got a letter from my mom that was out of order. The previous letter that I hadn't gotten yet told me about the diagnosis and the fact that she was fine and that there was no need to worry, etc, etc. But the letter that I got first, just randomly mentioned her diagnosis of MS. I freaked out and was crying. President Stevenson saw me and pulled me aside. Once I explained what was happening he insisted that I call home and find out the details .. that is why I had spoken to my family just before writing this letter)
