What's This Blog All About

Last night, my husband saw a link to a blog that I follow of a sister missionary who is currently serving is South America. She has letters home posted on the blog so that friends and family can keep posted on what is going on with her and her time serving as a full time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My husband was curious and started reading the blog. This of course got him thinking about his own mission which he served part of in Lithuania and part of in Iowa (with a break in the middle for a short trip home for brain surgery)almost 15 years ago. He decided to look for the letters that he had written home while he was a missionary. Well, of course, this got me thinking about my time as a missionary in South Africa. I decided to pull out my letters that I wrote home and my photo album etc. I began to think it would be fun to turn this all into a blog. I think it will be cool to be able to put it all in digital form and have it made into a book, eventually. I also thought it might be amusing for the many friends from my days as a missionary (either companions, fellow missionaries, members I met there, or those I had the opportunity to teach or just associate with while there in South Africa) most of which I have been blessed to be in contact with through Facebook, to be able to read my perspective on our interactions. And of course, it will be a great way for me to take a long stroll down memory lane.

So, this is the beginning of a very long project. I wrote home once a week for 18 months. I have a lot of letters to transcribe! :) Just as a disclaimer, I know there are some things that I wrote home that I won't feel comfortable making public. I may edit a few small things, but plan on keeping most of this very candid. I may leave out or change a few names, but again, I will keep it all as original as possible. So ... here goes! :)

I left for the MTC on December 28th. This was Christmas Day, so just a few days before I left.

This is Dee. He was my brother's best friend. If it was up to my family, he would have been my boyfriend or even fiance', but we were just good friends. He is a great guy.
