From the MTC 1/11/95 (or so, didn't date this one)

Mom, Dad & Family-

Well, another preparation day! The weeks have flown by so quickly! I can't believe I leave in 4 days. Time flys!

Things are going well here. I love the MTC and the experiences I am having here. I am having a hard time with my companion. She is very homesick and she is very emotionally unstable! She cries every day. There is always something wrong. Either she is mad because the Elders talk to me too much or she wants to go home. I don't mean to complain, but I can't wait to get a new companion! It's amazing though, even though I can hardly stand her, I still love her. It's amazing how that works. :)

We just got back from the temple. I sure am going to miss going on my mission! I saw Brother Crane there. I waved to him, but he looked at me blankly, he must not have recognized me.

I saw Justin Johnson yesterday. He seemed pretty happy to be here. I didn't get too much of a chance to talk to him but he did say that you told him that I don't even miss all of you! That's not true! I do, but I'm just not homesick. It's a total blessing because I am able to help others in my district who are. Remember Elder Miller, my district leader? He is really struggling. He hasn't heard from his family or his fiancee. He tries to hide that he is homesick to everyone else, but for some reason he just tells me about it. I think it is rad, it's just like my setting apart said, about helping the Elders and Sisters to not be homesick.

(This is me with Justin Johnson. We grew up in the same ward and ended up both being called to South Africa on our missions at the same time, though he served in Johannesburg instead.)

I'm so happy about Kaitlyn. I've been fasting and praying for her. I'm sad I can't see her at the airport, but I totally understand.

I can't remember if I've given you my specific flight plans yet. So, here they are. It's TWA 742. My departure time is 7:35am. I think I just remembered that I did give them to you.

Would you like to know about my district? Well, I'm going to tell you. (By the way, will you please hang on to my letters so I can go back and read all of this, like a second journal). I'll just go by companionship in order of how we sit in the classroom. First is Elder Karren. He is from Provo and is going to Utica NY. He is the comedian of the group. He's a little outspoken at times, like when we are trying to study and such. He and I get along really good. His companion is Elder Kelly from Orem, going to the same mission. Elder Kelly is quiet, but every once in a while he comes up with some hilarious comment. I haven't gotten to know him too well because he's quiet and his companion is quite over bearing. Then there is Sister Clements, and I've already told you about her. Then me. Then Elder Erickson, who is from the Sacramento area and he's going to NY, NY South mission. He is in to karate, he's totally silent most of the time. He's a deep thinker. It's always a challenge for me to try to get him to laugh. A giggle is all I've gotten so far. He's also an excellent artist. Then there's one of his companions, Elder Smither, he's from Lousiville, Kentucky. He's the thoughtful one of the crowd. He's always looking out for us Sisters and always correcting the other Elders if they tease us or say something slightly inappropriate. He likes to talk to me about his girlfriend back home. Then there's Elder Miller, the 3rd of the threesome and I've already told you about him. He's Rad! Then there is Elder Flores, he is originally from the Philippines (my spelling is terrible, I know) but has been living in Southern CA. Oh, by the way, Elder Smither and Elder Miller are both going to Las Vegas. Elder Flores is going to NY, Utica. He's a spaz. He is so clueless half the time about what we're doing in class because he is so busy making faces and farting! He is a total flirt with all the sisters, but is really funny! His companion is Elder Daniel. He is from SLC and is going to NY, Utica also. He is quite different. But he is funny as heck. He is very effeminate, but is really cool about it. He is recovering from anorexia. He's having a hard time here. But he's doing better. Elder Henson is a big fellow, he weighs 300 lbs. I think he's like 6'3" or so. He is very condescending. He always has a correcting comment to make, but he is really nice to me. A little too nice for comfort! His companion is Elder Hill from Spanish Fork. He is rad also. He is a really good guy, he is right up there with Elder Karren with being the comedian. He is a major cowboy. He's going to NY, Utica also (Elder Henson is also).

Well, that's my district! We are all so different, but we all get along really well!

I had better go! Thank you so much for your letters! I am so grateful to be here. I love being a missionary. It is a great experience! My testimony is growing so much! I love it! I love you all so much! I'll see you all on Monday!

Love,

Michelle
